The Ten Essential Systems
The purpose of this information is to identify, explain and help you acquire the essential minimum equipment required for Troop outdoor activities. Complete packing lists are found in the Handbook. The Boy Scout Handbook provides an excellent general packing list for outdoor activities. The first part of the list identifies Outdoor Essentials or as they are also known as “The Ten Essentials”. This list was originally developed in 1906 by The Mountaineers climbing club in
The list has recently gotten updated and become The Ten Essential Systems. The focus is on the areas of need and the equipment to meet those needs. The pooling of this individual equipment such as extra sweaters, rope or water can assist any member needing help.
The Ten Essential Systems focus on the ten basic needs in the outdoors:
Navigation Fire
Sun Protection Repairs
Insulation Nutrition
Illumination Hydration
First Aid Shelter
Summary of minimum gear for the Ten Essential Systems:
Navigation Map, Compass, Whistle
Sun Protection Sunscreen, dark glasses, hat, bandana
Insulation Extra clothes.
Illumination Working flashlight and extra batteries
First Aid Assorted Band aids, Neosporin, moleskin, soap
Fire Waterproofed matches and homemade firestarters
Repairs Small sharp knife and 6’ of duct tape
Nutrition Extra food and eating utensils
Hydration 1 quart canteen filled before leaving home
Shelter Raingear, garbage bags, 50’ of line, ground cloth
