The Ten Essential Systems

The purpose of this information is to identify, explain and help you acquire the essential minimum equipment required for Troop outdoor activities. Complete packing lists are found in the Handbook. The Boy Scout Handbook provides an excellent general packing list for outdoor activities. The first part of the list identifies Outdoor Essentials or as they are also known as “The Ten Essentials”. This list was originally developed in 1906 by The Mountaineers climbing club in Seattle Washington. These climbers quickly determined that participants in outdoor activities need certain minimum equipment common to all activities. What it all came down to is that all those involved in an outdoor activity must be individually prepared for the inevitable unexpected situations. These items have been standard equipment for the Boy Scouts for all of our history.

The list has recently gotten updated and become The Ten Essential Systems. The focus is on the areas of need and the equipment to meet those needs. The pooling of this individual equipment such as extra sweaters, rope or water can assist any member needing help.

The Ten Essential Systems focus on the ten basic needs in the outdoors:

Service projects

March - worked at Alpharetta marathon.


April 2 - made 100 Easter baskets for North Fulton Charities.

April 14 - painting the trailer that was donated to the church.

leadership training

scheduled for march 28.

Mandatory - all leadership positions in the troop to attend.

SPL, ASPLs, Staff, Patrol Leaders.

We'll be setting goals, group and personal, for the troop for the next 6 months.

Older scouts participation

We need the older boys back - for more reasons than one. They need fellowship, new scouts need mentoring and skills taught them.

Some bullet points:
  • Discipline and fun will be the watchwords for the weekend. With a large group that we have we will have to guard against idleness.
  • We need to be ever watchfull and pull in the SPL and ASPLS when we need an activity. Sam and his asssistants will have activities.
  • We want we to have advancement opportunities when we see scouts not actively engaged.
  • We have the team assignments Advisors as well as Patrol Advisors that we need to have working this weekend. I will send a note to all scouts reminding them to bring their books.
  • We will have Scoutmaster conference sign ups friday night and we will need to make time for that during the weekend.

Notes for the SPL
  • We don't want the "boxer brigade" left on their own again - make sure Preston and Emory have them covered and they are reporting their planned movements to them - they have know where the Eagle and Cobra Patrols are and what they are doing at all times.
  • Lashing on friday - again, make sure Andy has the people he needs to be lashing. He and his team will also have to load lashing spars on the the trailer when Mr Michael or Mr Allison (not sure who) bring it around. You will not be doing things - only overseeing and coaching.
  • Seating assignments : We have the 2 buses (25 + 14 passenger seats in each) - let me know what patrols will ride where. Some scouts will go in private vehicles - you need to decide who. Mr Hutchinson is compiling a list of what private vehicles will be driving.
  • Friday night - will have a PLC. Have Preston run that - he needs to give you the agenda. Coach him on what needs to be talked about. I suggest communicating the weekend's program and assignments to the PLC. Make sure Ian Allison is there to represent the Troop Guides (Max can help him).
  • Saturday morning we also need to have our own troop flag cermony and troop meeting. Communicate enthusiasm and ensure we are all here to have FUN. Re-iterate that discipline is key - anyone stepping out of bounds WILL be sent home. Plan what time the PLC should be.
  • Tenting - as we discussed, make sure the scouts are well mixed and spread out as patrols. we'd like to have the new scouts and older boys patrols mixing. Also need to make sure we have tents for the new scouts.
  • Campfire planning : Have Emory get the skits from Daniel and fill out the form that the camporee staff require from us.
  • Make sure Max has the campfire wood and knows where to build the fire. We will find out Friday night when you and I go to the cracker barrell.

as decided at the plc, new patrols cooking will include all and we'll be cooking side by side. Shelters and wash stations will be communal (all will use).
All patrols will assign and post cooks and cleanup (2 per session). Only these scouts will be allowed in the cooking area.

QMs will be responsible for consumables to be supplied by the troop, and have requisition forms for patrol requests.

QM shall have a list of campout participants in order to know what patrol boxes to be loaded.

we will be going to FDR park and Pine Mountain Trail for the May campout for a backpacking experience.

Base camp : introduce new scouts to backpacking - 5 mile day hike. trip to warm springs?
Intermediate backpacking : 5 - 6 mile in - sleep over, 5 - 6 mile back.
Advanced : 20 - 25 miles : 2 night overnight. Friday night start, saturday overnight.

Need adult and youth to lead all 3 trips.
